Referee

The referee is positioned in the center of play and is responsible for enforcing the laws of the game.  All major game decisions are made by the referee.

Assistant Referee – Linesman

The linesmen help the referee by signaling when a ball is out of play over the touch lines.  There are two official linesman, one for each side of the field.  Linesmen may also signal off-side to the referee.  The foul will be called.

Referee and Linesmen Assignment

A list with the current referees and linesmen will be established by the referee coordinator.  Coaches may be notified weekly during the season via email to inform them of the referee and linesmen assigned to their game.

Certification

$50 refunded after games, usually in January-February.  Contact the referee coordinator.

Recertification

PA West referee camp is held during the last week in July.  The fee is refunded after officiating 8 games.  You can recertify in September.  The referee coordinator sets-up recertifications with PA West.

Payment Policy

Referee compensation is determined by the type of game assigned, as well as the position assigned.  Contact the current referee coordinator for a current pay schedule.

Referees are booked for a game one week in advance by the referee coordinator.  Games are assigned no later than Tuesday or Wednesday and referees are notified via email or telephone.

Referee Payment

  1. Referees will be paid by KASL check.  The checks are for two weeks of work and will always be available at the field the third weekend following two consecutive weeks from the first week of the season.  For example, in an 8 week season, checks will be distributed at the field by the referee assignor in the following manner:

Week 1

Week 2

Week 3

Check available for weeks #1 & #2

Week 4

Week 5

Check available for weeks #3 & #4

Week 6

Week 7

Check available for weeks #5 & #6

Week 8

Week 9

Check available for weeks #7 & #8 (These checks may be mailed)

The only exception to this schedule and payment method is for non-KASL referees assigned to officiate travel games.  Those referees will be paid at the game in cash.  The Referee Assignor will have a cash voucher signed by the Non-KASL Referee in these instances.

  1. All referees (both KASL and Non-KASL) must complete an IRS W‑9 form before they can be paid.  If any referee earns over $600 in a calendar year, KASL is required to issue a Form 1099 and report the income to the IRS.  The payment of the appropriate taxes is the sole responsibility of the referee, who is considered to be an independent contractor.  All referees are free to accept or reject any assignment made by the referee coordinator.  Certified referees are also, of course, free to officiate games for other clubs outside of KASL.
